Heart for the Hungry

Next distribution will be

February 25

9am-11:00pm

Gateway Fellowship will be leaving its current building location at the end of February. For the foreseeable future, we will be meeting at Natomas High School, which means that until we have a permanent home once again, Heart for the Hungry will need a new location we can call home, a place to both store food as it comes in during the month and distribute that same food at the end of each month. Please pray for HFH. We need to find our next place of distribution by the end of this month.

Heart for the Hungry is one of Gateway Fellowship’s many ministries. We opened our doors in March 2011. We provide the opportunity for food for ALL Sacramento community members in need, with a special focus on Natomas. We currently feed approximately 400 individuals per month. Distribution is held on the last Saturday of every month, with exception of May, November and December (for holidays) when distribution is held on the third Saturday. All distributions are held at the church. The types and amount of food distributed each month vary, as we rely solely on donations.

We are in constant need of non-perishable food items. Foods that we are in need of include: rice, pasta, beans, canned foods (tuna, vegetables, fruit), peanut butter and jelly, and healthy snack items and cereal. A bin will be available outside of the sanctuary doors to collect food donations, each Sunday between 10:00 and 11:30 AM. We are also in need of clean plastic grocery bags and sturdy card board boxes (apple boxes are ideal). If Sunday mornings are not a convenient time for donation drop off, please email us at hfhgateway @ gmail.com, and we will gladly make other arrangements.

Food of the Month:

This month we will have a leaves in the lobby of the church. (Don’t worry, Pastor Mike; they won’t be real.) Each leaf will have an item written on it. So grab a piece of fall and help us feed those who are hungry.

Donations

To join us in our efforts to stop hunger in our community, please make your donation payable to Gateway Fellowship – HFH, and mail it to Gateway Fellowship, 1515 Sports Drive, Sacramento, CA 95834 (ATTN: HFH). All of your donations are tax deductible. If you, or your business, are interested in other long-term partnering opportunities with HFH, please contact hfhgateway @ gmail.com.

Volunteer Opportunities

HFH is sustained by volunteers working throughout the month. Volunteering opportunities include picking food up at Senior Gleaners on the 2nd and 4th Fridays (warehouse is less than 10 minutes from Gateway Fellowship) of each month, unloading Foodbank delivery the last Friday of each month, and packing boxes on the last Friday of each month. We also need volunteers on distribution day, which is typically the last Saturday of each month. Volunteers can choose from a variety of duties including: setting up, greeting, checking visitors in, running boxes, manning food stations, translating (Spanish), packing boxes, praying, and cleaning up. Visit our monthly volunteer link below for more information about each of these volunteering opportunities.

MISSION STATEMENT

Simply, our mission is solely to help those in our community who are in need. A Heart for the Hungry is a community organization designed to provide a monthly food supplement to individuals, youth, children and families in Natomas and the surrounding communities who are in need of food and support. We want to support community members that are in need by helping to provide nourishment: both nutritionally and spiritually through this ministry.  Currently, we are the only food distribution center in the entire surrounding community. By working with our community and corporate resources we want to provide ALL of the people in our community with healthy food to stop starvation and hunger in our community.

MISSION OBJECTIVES

Isaiah 58:10
Feed the hungry and help those in trouble. Then your light will shine out from the darkness!

  • To meet the physical and spiritual needs of members in our community through Jesus Christ

James 2:14-17
What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

  • To be a presence of Jesus Christ’s love and compassion in the Natomas community.

2 Corinthians 9:9-11
As it is written: “They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor; their righteousness endures forever.” Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.

John 6:26-28
Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.”
